机械设计制造及自动化专业至少包括三个部分：机械设计、机械制造、机械自动化，在行业里分别称为机设、机制、机电。在大学本科阶段一般也就将它细分到此，根据不同的学校的传承，可能还会有矿山机械、建筑机械等细分，以我们学校为例就是将该专业下的班级分为：机设、机制、机电、矿机四部分。

智能化是21世纪机械自动化技术发展的一个重要发展方向。那里所说的“智能化”是对机器行为的描述，是在控制理论的基础上，吸收人工智能、运筹学、计算机科学、模糊数学、心里学、生理学和混饨动力学等新思想、新方法、模拟人类智能，使它具有决定推理、逻辑思维、自主决策等潜力，以求得更高的控制目标。诚然，使机械自动化产品具有低级智能或人的部分智能，则是完全可能而又必要的。
3、模块化
模块化是一项重要而又艰巨的工程。由于机械自动化产品种类和生产厂家繁多。研制和开发具有标准机械接口、电气接口、动力接口、环境接口的机械自动化产品单元是一项十分复杂但又是十分重要的事。如研制集减速、智能减速、电动机于一体的动力单元，具有视觉、图像处理、识别和测距等功能的控制单元以及各种能完成典型操作的机械装置。这样，可利用标准单元迅速开发出新的产品，同时也可扩大生产规模。显然，从电气产品的标准化、系例化带来的好处能够肯定，无论是对生产标准机械自动化单元的企业还是对生产机械自动化产品的企业，模块化将给机械自动化企业带完美的前程。
4、网络化

5、微型化

该专业是传统的机械设计制造和先进的自动化技术相结合的产物，是机电一体化的宽口径专业，
机械行业是个老行业，人才需求一直是不冷不热。不过，近年来我国大型工业逐渐复苏，制造业发展正面临高级人才短缺的严峻挑战，工业制成品的自主技术和科技创新能力明显不足，且能耗、物耗高，浪费、污染严重，庞大的工程技术队伍不能有效转化为人力资源优势，正成为制约制造业快速发展的主要因素。业内专家介绍，制造业高级人才大致可以分成研发、设计、工艺、装配四种。目前这四种人才都严重短缺，呈现明显的供不应求趋势。同时，具有开发能力的数控人才也成为各企业争夺的目标。
机械设计制造及其自动化由于涉及机械、电子、自动控制及计算机等诸多学科门类，为跨专业、跨行业就业提供了强有力的保障。
该专业在许多院校的就业率统计中，已经连续多年达到90%以上。
